On his return from South Africa, Simpson joined Richmond Rugby Club, and in 1893 was selected to play for invitational touring team, the Barbarians.
Halifax had to win nine rounds to win the trophy, which included a memorable 20-19 win over the famous Richmond Club in the Quarter Final.
In 1905, T B Batchelor joined as a holiday member, and was the club's only England International, playing against France before of a crowd of 6,000 at Richmond, with England winning 41 to 13.
Harlow have never won the Essex Cup, however, Harlow has won the Eastern Counties Cup twice; firstly in 1995 and secondly in 1997, and in 1999 a Harlow Sevens squad reached the Middlesex 7s finals and played on the hallowed turf at Twickenham Stadium beating Richmond in their last tournament as a professional club.
Amongst the players, at least three had previously toured East Africa; Patrick Orr (twice, with Anti-Assassins in 1965 and Richmond F. C. in 1963), Chris Ralston (with Richmond F. C. in 1963) and Brian Stoneman (twice, with Richmond F. C. and Combined (Oxford and Cambridge) Universities, both in 1963).
He played rugby union as a fly half for Richmond and also served as its Director of Rugby, during its transition from amateur to professional rugby.
