The palaces of Wrangel, Hessenstein, and Schering Rosenhane are today used by Svea Hovrätt, the appellate court for Svealand, while the Supreme Court and the Supreme Administrative Court reside in the palaces of Bonde and Stenbock respectively.
Several other historical structures there are also named for him including the street Birger Jarlsgatan on Norrmalm and the tower Birger Jarls Torn on Riddarholmen.
Since King Gustav Vasa (1496–1560) had the water level of the lake Hammarbysjön increased by 4.8 metres, the lake emptied into Saltsjön through a small rivulet overshadowed by a simple wooden bridge and the familiar silhouette of an old mill, and for many centuries Danviken remained mostly renowned for its hospital, Danviks hospital, which the king had moved from Riddarholmen near the city.
In 1630 the Councillor Åke Tott (1598–1640) was granted permission to build a drawbridge over to his estate on Riddarholmen from the north-western corner of the House of Knights, a construction that would survive himself with only 15 years.
