4 unusual facts about River Irthing

Burtholme

Burtholme Beck is a small beck running through the parish of Burtholme feeding into the River Irthing.

The land around the hamlet extends down to the River Irthing and presumably is the holme (a piece of flat low-lying ground by a river or stream) of Burtholme or Burt's holme.

Gilsland

It has a population of about 400, most of whom live on the Northumberland side of the River Irthing and Poltross Burn.

River Irthing

Peregrine falcons and ravens nest near the waterfall and derelict military structures, probably pump-houses supplying water for the Blue Streak rocket site at RAF Spadeadam, can be seen just upstream.
