All three stations were in the flood plain of the River Rother, which repeatedly led to problems.

On the north bank of the river is Bodiam Castle, built soon after 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge.

There was some concern in the House of Lords that the lock would not be large enough to accommodate the freighter, although it would be possible to open both sets of lock gates when the tide level was suitable.

The Rennie brothers, John and George, who had taken over from their father on his death in 1821, produced two reports on the river in 1830, as it was difficult to navigate and prone to flooding.
Laman Blanchard, writing in 1836, described the Rother as "a beauteous stream", and noted that chub, roach and perch were caught by fishermen who fished from its banks.

Half of the total of 2,500 chub and 2,500 roach were released near the new weir, and the other half at Hall Road in Staveley.
The Rother Valley is the valley of the River Rother, of which there are at least three in England.
The brook for which the hamlet is named rises in the valley and forms one of the sources of the River Rother which meets the sea at Rye.

This stream, the River Lod, runs parallel to the larger River Rother which flows about 10 km further south in the lee of the chalk escarpment of the South Downs.
The planned Rother Link will connect the Chesterfield Canal at Killamarsh, via the River Rother through to the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation, thus creating a new cruising ring and encouraging boats to visit the Chesterfield Canal.
The River Rother flows through the village at the bottom of Hepthorne Lane, next to the Midland Main Line.
The Rother Link is a scheme that would see the River Rother upgraded to navigable status from Rotherham as far as Killamarsh, where a short canal would link to the Chesterfield Canal to complete a leisure cruising circuit.
