Chauny

The town today has three collèges and four lycées : there is a scientific, technical and professional lycée, Jean Macé, a general and technical lycée, Gay-Lussac, a private lycée, Saint-Charles, and a private agricultural lycée, Robert Schuman.

Ligugé Abbey

During World War II the abbey gave shelter to Robert Schuman, the future distinguished French politician and champion of the European Union, in August 1942 while he was waiting for passage to the free zone, as well as to Amadou Bow of Senegal, future director of UNESCO.

Robert Schuman

His father, Jean-Pierre Schuman (1837–1900), was born in Évrange, Moselle, just across the border with Luxembourg.

Robert's mother, Eugénie Duren (1864–1911), a Luxembourger born in Bettembourg, became a German citizen by marriage in 1884.

It also houses the remains of Robert Schuman, the "father of Europe," who died in the town in 1963.
