The calcareous limestone grassland includes a range of fescue species and herbs such as Rock Rose, Thyme, Stemless Thistle, Salad Burnet and Bird's-foot Trefoil.
The butterflies drink nectar from the flowers of the Wild Thyme and the caterpillars eat the leaves of Rock Rose, the areas in which these two plants grow are protected from sheep grazing by fencing.
Oklahoma's Apollo 11 Moon Rock and Apollo 17 Goodwill Moon Rock- Rose Niang-Casey, a graduate student at the University of Phoenix, and a participant in the “Moon Rock Project”, was assigned the task of hunting down the Oklahoma Apollo 11 Moon rock and Apollo 17 Goodwill Moon Rock; two moon rocks the Nixon Administration gifted to the people of Oklahoma.
Blue moor-grass, Sesleria albicans, a characteristic plant of such grassland, is present but not abundant in the primary grassland on the hill slopes, where herbs such as rock-rose, Helianthemum nummularium, are more common; blue moor-grass is more plentiful in the secondary grassland on the quarry floor and spoil heaps, where it is associated with species such as quaking grass, Briza media, salad burnet, Sanguisorba minor, and autumn gentian, Gentianella amarella.
Other insect groups on the site are less well surveyed, but several rare species have been noted, including for six species of weevil Curculionoidea, eight species of plant bugs, Hemiptera and Homoptera; and two species of Chrysomelid beetle, Apthona herbigrada and Mantura matthewsii, both of which feed on the rock rose Helianthemum.
The granites were formed later as the Australian Plate collided with the Antarctic Plate 1160 million years ago as molten rock rose to the surface.
