The Office of Naval Research (USA ONR) used the Loki in some of its Rockoon launches, lofting the Loki to high altitudes on a helium balloon before firing, for upper atmosphere research.
James Van Allen of the University of Iowa proposed a cylindrical satellite based on his work with Rockoons, which became Explorer 1, the first American satellite.
