The three days before Ascension Thursday are sometimes referred to as the Rogation days and the previous Sunday, the Sixth Sunday of Easter (or the Fifth Sunday after Easter), as Rogation Sunday.
The beginnings of the tradition can be traced to the Roman holiday of Robigalia, where a goat was sacrificed and crops were blessed in the name of the God Robigus.
•
The then Archdeacon of Essex, Grindal of London, beseeched the church to explicitly label the tradition as a perambulation, so as to further distance itself from the Catholic liturgy.
•
In Montier-en-Der, Rogation Day processions were said to be events where miracles occurred.
•
In London, Rogation Days, just like Easter or Hocktide, were times when begging was "legitimate" for the period of celebration.
