In its early years, helping to establish the Festival as a major international event were conductors Tullio Serafin and Nicola Rescigno, singers such as Ghena Dimitrova, Maria Chiara, Giuseppe Taddei, and Rolando Panerai, and well-known directors and set designers such as Giancarlo Menotti, Dinos Giannopoulos, Spyros Evangelatos, Nikos Georgiadis, Dionyssios Fotopoulos, and Nikos Petropoulos.

Rolando Panerai

He sang in many rarely performed Verdi operas on radio broadcast for RAI in 1951 (to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Verdi's death), such as Giovanna d'Arco, La battaglia di Legnano, and Aroldo.

His acting skills and stage charisma were appreciated by great directors such as Giorgio Strehler, Franco Zeffirelli and Luchino Visconti.

He was one of the best-known exponents of Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini for many years, singing the role in Genova as recently as 2011, at the age of 87.

Many of their collaborations (together with other regular partners Giuseppe di Stefano, Boris Christoff, Tito Gobbi, Rolando Panerai, and Tullio Serafin) were recorded by Fonit Cetra ("La Gioconda", 1952) and EMI.
