On 5 March 1997, Rode was appointed Archbishop of Ljubljana, and thus de facto Primate of Slovenia, by Pope John Paul.
The local parish church, from which the settlement gets its name, is dedicated to Saint Gotthard and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ljubljana.
