In 1874, Goodwyn was posted back to India with his regiment, where he died, at Roorkee, on 14 March 1874 (the day after his 24th birthday) as a result of injuries suffered in a riding accident.
During 1871–1881, he was Instructor in Mathematics at the Thomason Civil Engineering College, Roorkee.
On November 7, 1853, the regiment moved to Roorkee, where it has maintained its regimental centre ever since.

He is a founding board member of the IIT-Roorkee Heritage Fund.
In recognition of his services, he was honored with ‘National hydrology award’ in 1987 by National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee and ‘Honorary Doctorate’ in 1989 by Sri Venkateswara University.
He is graduated from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (erstwhile University of Roorkee) from Civil Engineering department.
