An Oregon native, born in Coquille, and raised in Roseburg, Serafin graduated from Washington State University in 1964, and began his journalism career at the University's public radio station.
Hermann also served as deputy collector of internal revenue for southern Oregon from 1868 to 1871 and receiver of public moneys at the United States land office in Roseburg from 1871 to 1873 and was a colonel in the Oregon State Militia from 1882 to 1884.

In addition to Feldkamp's mother and grandfather who were first citizens of Roseburg, his brother Steve Feldkamp sits on the board of Wildlife Safari and is vice president of Umpqua Dairy, while brother Doug Feldkamp is president of Umpqua Dairy, a director of Oregon Pacific Bancorp, a commissioner of the Roseburg Public Works Commission, and the Douglas County Planning Commission.
Kitzhaber practiced medicine from 1973 to 1986 in Roseburg, Oregon as an emergency room physician.
In 2008, he was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives representing District 2, which encompasses portions of Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine counties, including the cities of Canyonville, Glendale, Myrtle Creek, Riddle, and Roseburg.
