The Antarctic Petrel (Thalassoica antarctica) is a boldly marked dark brown and white petrel, found in Antarctica, most commonly in the Ross and Weddell seas.

Mauger Nunatak

It was named by the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (1961–62) for C.C. Mauger, a crew member of the Aurora, the vessel which transported the Ross Sea party of Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914–17) from Australia to the Ross Sea.

Pliocene climate

West Antarctic Ice Sheet extent oscillated at the 40Kyr period of Earth's obliquity, ice sheet collapse occurred when global average temperature were 3 °C warmer than today and carbon dioxide concentration 400 ppmv and resulted in open waters in the Ross Sea.
