In 2005, NHS Lothian decided to develop plans to move the Sick Kids from its present site to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France on the south-east edge of the city.
The hospital was originally completed at Garnethill in 1882 and opened on 20 December as the Hospital for Sick Children.

The hospital was suffering from a chronic lack of space by the 1900s and as a result a new site at Yorkhill was chosen for the replacement hospital building.
The Royal Hospital for Sick Children located in Edinburgh is to be rebuilt on the Little France site beside the Infirmary.
