An inquest was held on 14 December 1951 at the Royal Naval Hospital, Gillingham, where many of the injured were being treated, before the North-East Kent Coroner.
The hospital was opened as the Royal Naval Hospital by King Edward VII on 26 July 1905 as a replacement for the 252 bed Melville Hospital (Naval), which was not large enough to deal with the increasing numbers of Naval personnel moving into Chatham.

Royal Naval Hospital Gibraltar was replaced by PRMC Gibraltar (Princess Royal Medical Center Gibraltar), closed in 2007

The castle was designed and built after Vanbrugh had been the architect of the baroque houses at Castle Howard and Blenheim Palace, and shortly after Vanbrugh succeeded his architectural mentor Christopher Wren as Surveyor to the Royal Naval Hospital in 1716.
