Brian Oulton lived latterly in Stratford-upon-Avon and was married to the actress Peggy Thorpe-Bates (1914–1989), best known for her portrayal of the wife of Horace Rumpole ("she who must be obeyed") in the first television series of John Mortimer's novels.
Additionally, Gloucester Road is the residence (in the form of 25B Froxbury Court) of the fictional barrister Horace Rumpole of John Mortimer's Rumpole of the Bailey series of short stories.
She encounters notable historical and fictional characters such as Albert Einstein, Adolf Hitler when he was an unemployed artist and again when he had become Führer of Germany, Ernest Hemingway and Rumpole.
The 1980 TV Rumpole of the Bailey special, Rumpole's Return, used the Underground station for a scene with a fatal stabbing on the northbound platform.
