The cast-members' move to New York City differs from Rumspringa, the rite of passage in which some 16-year-old Amish are allowed to experience the outside world and to decide whether or not they wish to remain with their home communities.
Rumspringa is also the subject of the film documentary Devil's Playground (2002), which was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary and for three documentary Emmy Awards: Best Documentary, Editing, and Direction.

In each episode the group stayed with British families of different socio-economic levels, living in turn on a South London Council Estate, the Kent countryside and even staying at a Scottish hunting estate.
The film spawned a reality series, "Amish in the City", which Cantor's Stick Figure banner executive produced, as well as a non-fiction book "Rumspringa" by Tom Shachtman (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007).
