In 2013 Christiansen's son Rupert published an account of growing up with his father called I Know You’re Going to be Happy.
He has written a number of books, including a biography of Victorian poet Arthur Hugh Clough, and won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1988 for Romantic Affinities.
