Professor of English law Rupert Cross described Stevenson's pronouncement as "gibberish", and to the Court of Appeal in 1977 it seemed that Stevenson had made a distinction "without a difference".
He played several times in the top section of the British Chess Championship in the 1930s (for which only an elite group of twelve players qualified).
