Champion has written a number of nonfiction books, two of them collaborations with his mother-in-law, Ruth Park.
When contracted in 1942 by Ida Elizabeth Osbourne to write a serial for the ABC Children's Session, she wrote the series The Wide-awake Bunyip.

Niland married fellow writer, Ruth Park (1917–2010), on 11 May 1942 and the couple had five children: Anne (born ca. June 1943), Rory, Patrick and twin daughters, Kilmeny (1950-2009) and Deborah (1950-present).
The two collaborations are Ruth Park's Sydney, a guidebook, and Home Before Dark, a biography of Australian boxer Les Darcy.
