In 1939 it hosted the premiere of Rutland Boughton's third symphony and finally closed on 11 May 1941.
In 1892 he was apprenticed to a London concert agency and six years later his attention was attracted by several influential musicians including the Rothschild family which enabled him to raise sufficient monies to study at the Royal College of Music in London.

John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland and 9th Earl of Rutland (Boughton, 29 May 1638 – 10 January 1711, Belvoir Castle) was the son of John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland and Frances Montagu.
