He was married in a religious ceremony to his wife, Josephine, in 1990, but didn't marry her in a civil ceremony until March 31, 2007, in Kiwanja, near Rutshuru.
In January 2006 his forces attacked and occupied several towns in Rutshuru Territory in North Kivu province including Tongo, Bunagana and Rutshuru.
Lava flows from the Nyamuragira volcano, 40 km south-west, have come within 7 km of the town in recent years.
