The competition was known as Símadeild due to its sponsorship by Icelandic telecommunications company, Síminn.
In Iceland NMT service was stopped on 1 September 2010, when Síminn closed down its NMT network.

During that time, the Icelandic universities and hospitals in Akureyri and Reykjavík relied on emergency connectivity obtained via local internet providers Síminn and Vodafone.
