He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as a Communist Party of India candidate from Kovilpatti constituency in 2001 election.
Rajendran did his schooling in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and Chennai and did his BSc (1976) in Geology from University College, Kerala University and MSc (1978) from Cochin University of Science and Technology.
