On October 1, 2004, the town of Saigō merged with three neighboring villages to unify the island under the administration of the new town of Okinoshima.

Following defeat at the Siege of Kumamoto Castle and in other battles in central Kyūshū, the surviving remnants of the samurai forces loyal to Saigō Takamori fled back to Satsuma, seizing the hill of Shiroyama overlooking Kagoshima on 1 September 1877.
It was written specifically for the TBS television drama S: Saigo no Keikan, starring Osamu Mukai and Go Ayano, for which it serves as ending theme.
"I Say Good-bye" is a song written by Akinori Nakagawa and the theme song of the Japanese TV drama Saigo no Kazoku.
Saigō fled back to Kagoshima, only to be arrested and banished to Amami Ōshima island.

However, Saigō’s activity in Edo came to an abrupt end with the Ansei Purge by Tairo Ii Naosuke against anti-Shogunal activities, and the sudden death of Shimazu Nariakira.
The lead track was used as an ending theme song for the variety show Arabiki-dan, while the B-side "Saigo no Seifuku" was used as an image song for the 26th Yokohama International Women's Ekiden.
New Scientist magazine has reported that, in June 2006, a previously unknown geological fault was identified close to the Shimane Nuclear Power Plant, but it is expected to be years before the plant is strengthened.
The Nima Sand Museum, which opened in 1991, also has a 1-year hourglass ("The Sandtimer") in Nima, Shimane Prefecture, Japan which was also inspired by the Timewheel idea.
