During the Goa Inquisition in 1567, soon after the temples in Salcete had been destroyed, a meeting of its inhabitants was convened by the invading Portuguese and they were asked to disclose under oath the information regarding the properties held by the destroyed Hindu Temples.
Margao in pre-Portuguese times was one of the important settlements in Salcete and known as Matha Grama (the village of Mathas) as it was a temple town with nine Mathas in temple schools.

The District Library located at Navelim, Salcete, Goa -- just outside the South Goa headquarters city of Margao -- is named after the intellectual and former Parliamentarian from Navelim, Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes, who was born on May 31, 1829.
