He retired from the mines where he had risen to Sectional Shift boss, in 1995 and relocated to his home village in Samfya to concentrate on farming.

The island is served by passenger ferries from Samfya and Nsombo in Luwingu District and Chaba at the north end of the lake, and there is an airstrip at the mission,
The Memorial is reached from the tarred Serenje-Samfya highway via a turn-off to the north which is 10 km northeast from the turn-off south to Kasanka National Park.
