3 unusual facts about Samuel Marsden


Edward Marsden

Edward's father, Samuel Marsden, had been one of Duncan's first converts and was named after a famed Anglican missionary.

Kaimanawa horse

The first horses were introduced to New Zealand by Protestant missionary Reverend Samuel Marsden in December 1814, and wild horses were first reported in the Kaimanawa Range in central North Island of New Zealand in 1876 .

Paul-Antoine Léonard de Villefeix

Villefeix was the first Christian minister to set foot on New Zealand, pre-dating Samuel Marsden by forty-four years; and he was the first ordained minister to lead a Christian service there.


Booroola Merino

The Egelabra and Mumblebone strains of the Merino can be traced to Gamboola; these were derived from Samuel Marsden's flock, and like Macarther's flock, Marsden's flock was based on South African Escurial, Cape and Bengal Sheep.

Te Pahi

In 1805 Te Pahi was the first influential Māori leader to visit Port Jackson (Sydney) where he met Samuel Marsden.
