His four daughters survived him; the second, Dorothy, married Samuel Parr, vicar of Hinckley, and was thus the grandmother of Dr Samuel Parr, the famous Greek scholar.
Gerrald was brought to England whilst still a child and educated at Stanmore school, under Dr. Samuel Parr, where he showed promise as a student.

Born in Warwick on 22 January 1796, he was younger son of John Parkes, manufacturer, a close friend of Samuel Parr and Basil Montagu, in a circle that included William Field.
Educated at Stanmore School under Samuel Parr, at Harrow and then Oriel College, Oxford where he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine in 1787.
