Nicknamed "Superman", McKart turned pro in 1992 and in 1996 captured the WBO Light Middleweight Title by beating Santos Cardona by TKO.
Among the fighters he lost to during that phase of his career were Tracy Spann, James McGuirt, Todd Foster, Santos Cardona, Stephan Johnson, Glenwood Brown, Willy Wise (who would go on to beat Chávez and lose to the Mexican fighter in a rematch) Ray Oliveira and, in Santana's last fight, Wilfredo Negron.
Cardona and his Working Dog, a German Shepherd named "Zomie", were Killed In Action (KIA) February 28, 2009 in Uruzgan Province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, when the vehicle he was riding in struck a buried Improvised Explosive Device.
