He was an academic visitor at David Sarnoff Research Center (Sarnoff Corporation), at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center, at Marconi Electronic Systems, and a Visiting Professor at Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the New York University.
A physics graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and PhD student at in geophysical fluid dynamics from Rutgers University, he joined Sarnoff Corporation after graduation and worked through the ranks.

Starting in 1973, Carlson participated in research and development in the field of imaging systems, working with the RCA Sarnoff Laboratory.
(Note: RCA Laboratories, located in Princeton, NJ, became independent of RCA as a result of the corporate take-over by General Electric in 1986 and became Sarnoff Corporation, a subsidiary of SRI International through 2011, when it was absorbed by SRI.)
