By appearances and behaviour it has much in common with the Knysna Turaco of South Africa, and Schalow's Turaco which replaces it on the plateau regions to the west of its range.
It is replaced in the eastern lowlands by Livingstone's Turaco, which is comparable in appearance and behaviour.

Seven species of birds are strictly endemic: the Bamenda Apalis (Apalis bamendae), Bangwa Forest Warbler (Bradypterus bangwaensis), White-throated Mountain-babbler (Kupeornis gilberti), Banded Wattle-eye (Platysteira laticincta), Bannerman's Weaver (Ploceus bannermani), Mount Kupe Bush-shrike (Telophorus kupeensis) and Bannerman's Turaco (Tauraco bannermani), which is a cultural icon for the Kom people who live in the area.
The common name and scientific name commemorate the German explorer Gustav Fischer.

The White-crested Turaco has been shown to hybridise with the sympatric Prince Ruspoli's Turaco (Tauraco ruspolii) that contributed more to concerns about Ruspoli's Turaco that is considered endangered.
