He began his pilot training in 1928 at the German Air Transport School (Deutsche Verkehrsfliegerschule) at Schleißheim (28 May 1928 – 15 July 1928) and Warnemünde (16 July 1928 – 24 March 1929).
Jagdfliegerschule Schleißheim was formed on 1 April 1934 in Schleißheim and disbanded again on 9 June 1941.

In the early 20th century, Schleißheim was home to author Waldemar Bonsels, who was inspired to write his "Biene Maja" by a gnarly tree in the woods nearby.
