Merisotis previously served as chairman of the board for Scholarship America, the nation’s largest private-sector scholarship and educational-support organization; as vice chairman of the board of directors for the Washington Internship Institute; and as a member of the executive committee of the London-based European Access Network.
The scholarship program received its initial funding from proceeds from Katie Couric's book, The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons from Extraordinary Lives.
The title sponsor from 2004 to 2006 was Scholarship America, which is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charity that is the largest provider of scholarships for postsecondary education in the country.
On May 7, 2013, the board of directors voted to disaffiliate from Dollars for Scholars and its parent organization, Scholarship America.
