Formed in 1963 the MSTEC has been at its present 6½ hectare site in Scoresby, Victoria since 1986 when the land was leased from the Beamish Heavy Haulage at Wantirna.
The area of Scoresby was surveyed in 1857, and named after the Arctic explorer William Scoresby.

The modern scientific name Leucophaeus scoresbii, together with the obsolete common name "Scoresby's Gull", commemorates the English explorer William Scoresby (1789–1857).
He held the seat until 2002, when it was replaced with Scoresby, which Wells won.
