After spending a year in the Portuguese Primeira Liga with O Elvas C.A.D. and another three seasons back home in the Netherlands with MVV Maastricht and Omniworld, Hamdaoui made the switch to Scottish First Division side, Dundee FC during the 2006–07 Scottish First Division season.
In the 2012 summer, after playing two years with CD Alhaurino, one in Tercera División and the other in the regional championships, Rubén signed for Scottish First Division side Cowdenbeath, after his agent sent YouTube videos to club manager Colin Cameron and the player impressed in a subsequent trial.
