Born in Oneglia, Natta attended the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa together with the future President of the Italian Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, and in that city he began taking part in the opposition to Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime.
He obtained his first degree in literature and philosophy at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.

Figalli received his master degree in mathematics from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in 2006, and earned his doctorate in 2007 under the supervision of Luigi Ambrosio at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and Cédric Villani at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon.
It has signed exchange agreements with École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Lyon and Cachan, with the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Ghislieri College of Scuola Superiore Studi Pavia IUSS of Pavia and with the Scuola Galileiana di Studi Superiori di Padova.
