The race pitted Rice against four Democratic opponents: then-State Senator Eric Schneiderman, former prosecutor Sean Coffey, former State Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, and former insurance commissioner Eric Dinallo.

In May 2011, Council for Unity honored Sean and Anne Coffey, Earvin Johnson, Jr and Michael Mulgrew at their Annual "Champions for Children" dinner.

While stationed in Washington, Coffey attended Georgetown University Law Center at night, winning several academic awards (including best grades by a first-year evening student), serving as the sole evening-division editor of the Georgetown Law Journal and graduating magna cum laude in 1987.

Coffey is a member of the Board of Visitors of the Georgetown University Law Center and Vice President of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1978.
