Established in 1954 on grounds that were the location of the Battle of Bellewaerde during World War I, named after the old castle that to this day stands near the main entrance of the park.
His efforts would culminate in his supervision of the first successful deployment of what is nowadays considered as a weapon of mass destruction in military history, in Flanders, Belgium on April 22, 1915.

His father, Captain C. M. Merritt, was killed in the Second Battle of Ypres, on 23 April 1915.
