Originally based on the Japanese martial art Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, it has since incorporated techniqes from a diverse range of styles such as Japanese Judo, Korean Taekwondo, western boxing, as well as some Chinese Chin Na techniques from styles such as Shaolin Kung Fu and Eagle Claw.
The 1970s television series Kung Fu starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk on the run in the Wild West whose Zen (Ch'an) training is tested along his journey.

In 2000's, Shaolin gets pop-culture recognition by appearing on The Simpsons (TV series), where they visit the Shaolin Temple in the episode Goo Goo Gai Pan, which first aired in 2006.

To add to the insult, Drew's teacher Master Kwan (Kim Chan) confesses that he is not—as he had claimed—a Shaolin monk, and therefore he had not passed on the actual knowledge of Shaolin kung fu to Drew.
The official discipleship ceremony was held in Shaolin Temple and presided by his master, Shaolin Grand Master Shi De Yang.
In 2005 the center expanded into a 15,000 square foot facility and their list of available programs grew to include Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Chinese Wushu, Shaolin Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Acrobatics and Tahitian Dance.
The film follows a highly fictionalized version of San Te, a legendary Shaolin martial arts disciple who trained under the general Chi Shan, portrayed by the director's adopted brother Gordon Liu.
