In addition to Xu Zhimo, its other members included leading author and educator Hu Shi, poet Wen Yiduo, writers Liang Shih-chiu and Shen Congwen, Rao Mengkan, and sociologist Pan Guangdan.
Two other important influences were an anthology of short stories by Shen Congwen and a Chinese translation of stories by Anton Chekhov.
He began publishing short stories and essays regularly in Fiction Monthly and Crescent Moon, two highly influential literary magazines of the New Culture Movement.

The Crescent Moon Society was decidedly anti-political, and it is with this group that Shen Congwen found his literary philosophy fitted best.

He was born Shen Yuehuan (沈岳煥) on December 28, 1902 in the town of Fenghuang (then known as Zhen'gan) in west Hunan Province.

In 1927 there were more early works by authors who became famous, Mao Dun's novels Disillusion 幻灭, Wavering《动摇》, and Pursuit《追求》; Ding Ling's first novel Dream《梦珂》 and her early work Miss Sophia's Diary, Ba Jin's Destruction 《灭亡》; plus works by new writers Hu Yepin, Shen Congwen, Dai Wangshu, Shi Zhecun, Sun Xizhen 孙席珍、Zhang Tianyi, and others.
