Kalingga

In 674 CE the kingdom was ruled by Queen Shima, notorious for her fierce law against thievery, which encouraged her people to be honest and uphold absolute truth.

Kozu

Minami-Tori-shima

In 1914, William D. Boyce included Marcus Island as an obviously American island in his book, The Colonies and Dependencies of the United States.


Daikaku-ji

A poem by Ki no Tomonori in an anthology from the period, the Kokinshu, described the Kiku-shima, or island of chrysanthemums, found in the Osawa pond.

Fujiwara no Naritsune

According to that text, shortly after his father was exiled to Kikai-ga-shima, Naritsune was, in the sixth lunar month of 1177, summoned to Fukuhara and then to Bitchū province before himself being sent to Kikai-ga-shima.

Hideo Shima

Hideo Shima joined the Ministry of Railways (Japanese Government Railways) in 1925, where, as a rolling-stock engineer, he designed steam locomotives.

Shima was also involved in the design and development of the Class C62 and Class D62 steam locomotives for express passenger trains and heavy-duty freight trains, respectively.

Hiroshima Castle

"Hiro" was taken from Ōe no Hiromoto, an ancestor of the Mōri family, and "Shima" was taken from Fukushima Motonaga who helped Mōri Terumoto choose the castle site.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial

Intended for the Aioi Bridge, the bomb instead exploded directly over the Shima Clinic, which was very near to the Genbaku Dome.

Following Marcian "Ted" Hoff's initial conception, formulated in 1969, Shima later helped design the 4004 processor, working at the Intel offices for six months- from April until October 1970- with Federico Faggin, the project leader.

However, according to Shima himself, the logic was first tested on breadboards using TTL chips, before being manually translated into MOS transistor equivalents.
