Following the commissioning of the USS Nautilus, the S1W plant was operated to support plant testing and training of operators.
The engineering plant, weapon and electronic systems, galley, and multitudinous other equipment required to transform the new hull into an operating and habitable warship are installed and tested.

During World War I, twelve of the company's ships were commissioned into the United States Navy; a further five were sunk by submarines or mines during the conflict.
On 19 September 1939, he reported to the destroyer USS Greer (DD-145) at the Philadelphia Navy Yard at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Greer was undergoing preparations for recommissioning on 4 October 1939 to become a part of the Neutrality Patrol ordered soon after World War II began in Europe.
