He received much correspondence from the Head of the Mission of the People’s republic of Bangladesh (Calcutta and London), and the High Commissioner (Calcutta), Shirley Williams MP, Nigel Fisher MC MP, Mervyn Pike MP, Victor Goodhew MP, Peter Shore MP and many others.
He died in office in 1981 and was replaced in parliament by the first Social Democratic Party member to be elected, the former Labour Education Minister Shirley Williams.

She won a place at St Paul's Girls' School in Hammersmith, West London, an academic public school with a literary and political tradition; alumnae include the writers Monica Dickens, Selina Hastings, Flora Fraser; Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman; the actors Emily Mortimer, Jennifer Saunders, Joely Richardson and Rachel Weisz; and the politicians Harriet Harman and Shirley Williams.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) was formed by prominent figures on the right of the Labour Party in early 1981, known as the "Gang of Four" – Shirley Williams, Roy Jenkins, David Owen and Bill Rodgers.
Owen was a founder member (one of the Gang of Four, the other three being Baroness Shirley Williams, Lord Roy Jenkins and Lord Bill Rodgers) of the SDP and then broke away to form the real SDP, when the original SDP merged with the Liberals after an electoral pact of four years.
