It was made by Shochiku studios, as a response to the hugely successful Zatoichi series.
Major titles have included the Cardcaptor Sakura films, Mobile Suit Gundam movies, Origin: Spirits of the Past, Piano no Mori, Ghost in the Shell, Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos, Sword of the Stranger, and Jungle Emperor Leo.

In 1936, Shochiku closed its studio in Kamata, Tokyo and relocated to nearby Ofuna; this studio remaining in operation for 64 years.

Shochiku has also produced films by highly regarded independent and "loner" directors such as Takashi Miike, Takeshi Kitano, Akira Kurosawa and Taiwanese New Wave director Hou Hsiao-Hsien.

In the area are the Kabuki-za, the headquarters of Nissan Motors, the Shinbashi Enbujō (a theater owned by Shochiku), the Tōgeki (a Shochiku cinema), the Electric Power Development Company, and the Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Ginza Hotel.
He notes that it benefits from an opening dream-sequence satire of kaiju eiga, or monster films, with footage from Shochiku's entry in this genre, The X from Outer Space, employed.
