His son, Sir Ughtred James Kay-Shuttleworth (1844–1939), the eldest, became a well-known Liberal politician, sitting in parliament for Hastings from 1869 to 1880 and for the Clitheroe division of Lancashire from 1885 till 1902, when he was created Baron Shuttleworth.
He moved to another home, Leck Hall at Leck, Lancashire, on his estates, which was more convenient to his disability, leaving Gawthorpe Hall to his aunt, Rachel, who lived on at Gawthorpe Hall until her death in 1967.

During this time, Shuttleworth became involved in investigating the expeditions of Eizaburo Nomura and Zuicho Tachibana, even dining with them at Chini-Bagh.

Stones in the churchyard mark what is known as the grave of Little John, where in 1780 James Shuttleworth claims to have unearthed a thigh bone measuring 72.39 cm.

Philip Shuttleworth was second son of Humphrey Shuttleworth, vicar of Kirkham in Lancashire from 1771 to 1812, and of Preston from 1784 to 1809, an anti-papal writer.
The cottage was derelict until 1975 when the James Henry Shuttleworth the Lord of Abergwili and his wife Betty, the Lady of Abergwili from Wirral arrived and totally renovated it and carried on the tradition of selling refreshments to passers by and taking in guests.To date (2011) the cottage is still occupied by James H.Shuttleworth although his wife Betty died in 1988.
He was the son of Sir Charles Turner, Bt of Kirkleatham Hall, Yorkshire by his second wife Mary, the daughter of James Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe Hall.
In 2008, the book was adapted into a film called The Secret of Moonacre, written by Lucy Shuttleworth and Graham Alborough and directed by Gabor Csupo.
