At that time, the Italians advanced only as far as Sidi Barrani and established defensive positions there in a series of fortified camps.
On 29 August 1941 Schroer engaged in aerial combat with the top Australian ace Clive Caldwell of No. 250 Squadron RAF north-west of Sidi Barrani.
