Max Bruch explored the boundaries of the solistic and symphonic genres in the Scottish Fantasy (violin soloist), Kol Nidrei (cello soloist), and Serenade (violin soloist).

During the Second World War, the students were evacuated to Grantham in Lincolnshire, where she composed some of her earliest works, including the Sinfonia Concertante for piano and orchestra, and her First symphony.
In 1969, she won first prize in the Juilliard Concerto Competition performing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with violist Nobuko Imai.
