Sipacapa is currently the center of a dispute between local residents, who primarily identify as Maya (Sipakapense), and Goldcorp, a Canadian company that operates an open pit goldmine mostly the neighbouring municipality of San Miguel Ixtahuacán, but partially in Sipacapa.
