His father, William Harcourt Isham Mackworth (1806—1872), a younger son of Sir Digby Mackworth, the 3rd Baronet, took the additional surname Dolben after he married Frances, the heiress of Sir John English Dolben, the 4th Baronet.

Helen Purves-Hume-Campbell, daughter of the seventh Baronet, married Vice-Admiral Sir George Warrender, 7th Baronet, and was the mother of Victor Warrender, 1st Baron Bruntisfield.
In June 1914, just before the outbreak of the First World War his squadron visited the German naval port of Kiel, during the annual regatta attended by Kaiser Wilhelm II and senior German admirals.
